USA congressional baseball field shooter acts alone

He also did it the morning before attacking House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and other people.

Analysis of the electronic media items recovered from Hodgkinson's belongings assessed that Hodgkinson did not place any online posts of threats or references to members of Congress or the Congressional baseball game.

The attack at the baseball field appeared to be more spontaneous than planned out, Slater said.

"While the shooter was known to have a history of diagnosed mental illness, he is known, or it was known, to have an anger management problem", Timothy R. Slater, FBI special agent in charge, said at a press conference Wednesday.

The FBI says it found police calls to Hodgkinson's Belleville home over complaints of his holding target practice in his backyard, and a 2006 domestic battery charge.

TOM GJELTEN, BYLINE: The FBI and other agencies have spent the last week trying to figure out why James Tom Hodgkinson opened fire on Republican congressmen.

Scalise's office said Wednesday that the congressman, who was "as critical as it could be" when he arrived at a Washington, D.C., hospital last week, is now listed in fair condition. Bernie Sanders and was "in communication" with offices of his IL senators.

The investigation into the attack is still active as police continue to analyze evidence from the scene, authorities said.

Those injured in the shooting at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park ballfields in Alexandria, Va., were Louisiana Rep. Scalise; U.S. Capitol Police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner; Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika; congressional aide Zach Barth; and Texas Rep. Prior to his departure from IL, a neighbor reported Hodgkinson to police for firing a gun on his property, but police determined he had not committed a crime.

He said authorities found a laptop computer, a cell phone and a digital camera in Hodgkinson's vehicle but an analysis of the items showed that he did not place any online posts of threats or references to lawmakers or the baseball game.

After the shooting, investigators searched Hodgkinson's home in IL and a storage facility in Alexandria he began renting in April. Two days before the shooting, Hodgkinson messaged a family member seeking to return home, Slater said. The night before the shooting, Hodgkinson visited locations with free WiFi to search on his computer directions from Alexandria to his home in Belleville and the "2017 Republican Convention". For example, Slater said, a witness told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that on the morning of the shooting, Hodgkinson asked him, "Is this the Republican or Democratic baseball team?"

"Through a review of activity logs at the storage facility", he added, "we determined that the shooter visited his unit more than 43 times between April and June". Capitol Police officers who were assigned to Scalise returned fire, and were soon joined by Alexandria police.
