The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium thanks to a little help from a feline friend. They got "Rally Cat"-and now baseball has a new hero and meme".

The feisty feline became an internet sensation Wednesday night, sprinting onto the field at Busch Stadium with the bases loaded for the Cardinals with two outs in the sixth inning.

A black and gray cat ran past Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain and onto the warning track before a member of the grounds crew scooped it up.

Lucas Hackman, a member of the St Louis Cardinals grounds crew, removes the Rally Cat from the field during the sixth inning.

"We are hopeful someone will find the cat and contact us so we can properly care for it", the Cardinals said in a statement. Fans quickly dubbed it "Rally Cat", a fitting mascot for a team that's won five straight games to climb above.500 for the first time since June 2. Leading the Cardinals at the plate was Yadier Molina, who had a home run and three RBI while Jedd Gyorko also homered and drove in three.

"I thought, 'I'm taking this cat home". Just look at those reactions - she was positively fighting to keep running, leaving him desperate to hang on. She even has a cat stroller at home to walk him.

The Cardinals said they caught up to the fan as she left the ballpark to ask her questions, but "she abruptly left with the cat".

"I'm not a cat person, but I sure like that one", Cardinals manager Mike Matheny joked after the game, MLB.com reported.

"It's really fun to come to the park every day", first baseman Matt Carpenter said. "I want it to be safe, whether it was with me or someone else".
