Google has taken a page from Amazon's book in featuring its Assistant in lower-cost devices, which will bring in a larger user base.
"From the start, we've believed that your Google Assistant should be available wherever you need help, and that's why it's already on Google Home, eligible Android phones, iPhones, Google Allo, and Android Wear", Google senior director Abhi Taneja writes.
Smart speakers use always-listening microphones to detect their trigger word, then process and reply to voice commands in natural language. A price tag for the Zolo Mojo has yet to be revealed but it will be out before the end of 2017. Additional smart speakers and appliances to adopt Google Assistant will be announced in the days to come. And, aside from featuring Google Assistant, this speaker from Anker also has Google Cast in addition to WiFi and Bluetooth.
The idea of controlling appliances with a voice assistant isn't new, but it's starting to become more popular. Panasonic's offering has two 20mm soft dome tweeters and an 8cm woofer, and is set to deliver Hi-Fi audio. They can detect voices from across the room when they hear the wake phrase "OK Google". That way your Assistant will be able to distinguish your voice from your roommate or partner. This is what we're seeing today with the announcement of three new Google Assistant smart speakers and some soon to be released home appliances that will utilize the platform as well. While other smart speaker companies are coming at it from backgrounds in rugged portable Bluetooth speakers, Panasonic's history is more high-end, and the acoustic quality shows.
