Fiat Chrysler recalls Ram vehicles on fire risk

The Problem: In certain passenger-seating and vehicle situations, the second-row center seating position seat belt buckle could cause the left outboard seat belt to become unlatched, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Some of those fires caused damage to the vehicles in the area around the water pump.

Fiat Chrysler is recalling 443,712 heavy-duty pickups and medium-duty pickups to inspect and replace water pumps.

The recall involves Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs from the 2013 to 2017 model years.

The FCA spokesman said no estimates of the likely cost of the recall or number of faulty pumps is available. Customer reports led FCA to discover a water pump bearing that, in certain conditions, might overheat and cause a fire in the engine compartment.

"Compromised water-pump function may activate a warning light in an affected vehicle's instrument cluster".

All but 50,705 of the affected Fiat Chrysler vehicles were sold in the USA market, with the remainder sold in Canada and other global markets, it said. Fiat Chrysler encouraged customers to consult a dealer whenever a warning lights pops up. Ram is also preparing to launch its next-generation 1500 pickup that will debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit with a new high-tech interior.

FCA US is unaware of any related injuries, accidents, warranty claims or complaints.
