It said initial reports indicated the shooter had barricaded himself inside a building before being shot by police.

Crime tape blocks off Rancho Tehama Road leading into the Rancho Tehama subdivision south of Red Bluff, Calif., following a fatal shooting Tuesday.

Some 100 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, and students at the school have been safely evacuated, he added. The violence moved to Rancho Tehama Elementary School, and children were wounded.

"I'm told the suspected shooter was deceased by law enforcement bullets", Mr Johnston said. Johnston said the school had been cleared by 10 a.m. but he did not have any information about the victims there.

Schultz quoted another witness, Casey Burnett, who said the gunman was "driving around and shooting randomly from his vehicle".

Multiple shots were fired at the school and he was aware of at least three people killed, he added.

All other student were transported to a safe location following the shooting.

Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant at Corning Union Elementary School District-one of the locations of the shooting-said that no one was killed at the school, but several people were injured.

Tehama, the community in which the shooting occurred, is about 210km north of Sacramento and has a population of just 3500.

A semi-automatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the gunman, who engaged police in a shootout, have been recovered, according to Johnston.

A witness told KCRA-TV that his truck was stolen and his roommate was shot and killed by the suspect. Flint says he had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines.
