Florida State confirms Jimbo Fisher has accepted offer from Texas A&M

Fisher resigned as FSU's head coach on Friday to take the same job in College Station.

Fisher will not coach the Seminoles this Saturday in their regular season finale against Louisiana-Monroe. But Francois clearly would have preferred his head coach to have said something.

"Coach Fisher did an exceptional job as both an assistant coach at FSU and in the challenging role of successor to the legendary Bobby Bowden", Florida State president John Thrasher said in a statement.

While Florida State was holding its final practice for Saturday's game, Texas A&M's Board of Regents was meeting to discuss the hiring of a new coach. FSU needs to win that game to avoid going bowl-less for the first time since 1981. This game was supposed to be scheduled in Week 2 but was moved because of Hurricane Irma.

"Jimbo's a great football coach and my hope would be that he stays at Florida State University, but if he has other opportunities that are more valuable to him and his family, then I certainly understand that", Thrasher said. However, things didn't work out this year. He will replace Kevin Sumlin, who was sacked last weekend after going 51-26 in six seasons at Texas A&M.

At Florida State Fisher was the 5th highest paid coach in the nation, earning $5.7 million a year. If the base pay is $7.5 million, that would make Fisher the third highest paid coach in the country, behind Dabo Swinney and Nick Saban.

The deal looks like it will be a highly lucrative one for Fisher.

"I promised that you would be the first to know".

Florida State University has one of the premier programs in college football and has had only two head football coaches in the past 40 years. "I wish him the very best". Fisher has spoken about his desire for Florida State to add its own football-only building.
