"The future is tremendously bright at the University of Arkansas with the addition of Chad Morris", newly hired athletic director Hunter Yurachek said in a statement. ESPN reports the deal is in the $4 million range with the AP adding that the deal is for six years.
Morris leaves the Mustangs after compiling a 14-22 in three seasons. Their record was 2-10 his first year, 5-7 in 2016, and went 7-5 this past year.
The Mustangs qualified for a bowl game this season for the first time since 2012 when June Jones was the head coach for SMU. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Clemson from 2011-2014.
Without then mentioning Morris by name since the hiring wasn't official, Yurachek Wednesday morning said he was "100 percent comfortable with the results of the coaching search" conducted by Julie Cromer Peoples, Arkansas' senior associate athletic director who served as interim athletic director since the November 15 firing of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long. He led Lake Travis High School to back-to-back undefeated seasons and state championship in Texas' highest level of competition.
Morris took the SMU job in 2015 after spending four seasons as Clemson's offensive coordinator and saw Mustangs' record steadily increase since he was hired. SMU improved to 5-7 past year, including a 38-16 win over No. 11 Houston.
