LL Bean Changes Lifetime Guarantee to One-Year Return Policy

LL Bean Changes Lifetime Guarantee to One-Year Return Policy

"We stand behind all our products and are confident that they will perform as designed", the new return policy reads on the L.L. Bean website. This includes asking for refunds for products that had been worn for many years and seeking refunds for products purchased at yard sales. Customers will now have only one year to return an item - and that's with a receipt.

The spokesperson emphasized that the change in policy will have no effect on the remaining 85 percent of L.L. Bean customers who were not abusing the policy-the retailer will continue to make good on manufacturing defects and other product malfunctions outside of the one-year return period. Others are standing behind L.L. Bean, applauding their stance against those who abuse the system, citing this new policy as fair and reasonable.

The brand stresses that the change will only affect a small percentage of returns, and they're still standing by the quality of everything that they sell. In a Facebook post today, the brand announced it is doing away with its legendary "lifetime" return policy today, which allowed customers to return any item they weren't satisfied with-no questions asked.

"Based on these experiences, we have updated our policy".

LL Bean Changes Lifetime Guarantee to One-Year Return Policy

L.L. Bean has always been known for its promise to replace a defective product over the course of the item's life, but leaders in the company say a select few are taking advantage of that promise. Notably, the option for "repair" means that not all returns at Patagonia stores end in the customer walking out with a brand new product, sometimes just their refurbished old one. In 1912, 90 of the company's first 100 pairs of its signature boots fell apart.

The family-owned company is prepared for a backlash, but the changes honor the spirit of the founder's original guarantee, said Shawn Gorman, L.L.'s great-grandson and the company's chairman.

"The satisfaction guarantee and the intent of the guarantee is very much still intact". Abuse of the generous return policy with no time limit has accelerated thanks to people sharing their return stories on social media, they said.

It's not uncommon to hear stories of people clearing out basements of used or unwanted L.L. Bean products, sometimes decades after their purchase.
