Joaquin Phoenix as Joker in Coming Origin Story Film?

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker in Coming Origin Story Film?

What is unexpected, however, is that this is going to be a standalone movie-and potentially a period piece-completely removed from WB's DC Extended Universe (or whatever it's called these days).

To recall, it was past year when Warner Bros announced that it would be producing a solo "Joker" movie that will be separate from the studio's current brand of DC movies, the DCEU, which interconnects the story of other DC movies. Warner Bros. continues to develop a solo movie for The Joker, Batman and comicdom's greatest villain.

He will reprise in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff.

DC and Warner Bros. are ramping up production of the Joker standalone movie with Joaquin Phoenix most likely to play the role and will be directed by Todd Phillips who directed The Hangover. However, WB has not confirmed it as such, and there was once a time when Phoenix was in talks to play Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange, so don't take it as a done deal.

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is said to be attached as producer to the movie, which will lend inspiration from his films "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull", both of which are dark masterpieces, Comicbook.com reported.

Phoenix has been the top choice to take on other superhero roles before, but has been resistant to joining any major studio blockbuster.

Todd Phillips will co-write and direct the movie and although studio negotiations haven't began, he already has his eyes set on Phoenix for the lead role, Variety exclusively reports.

Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to circle the project, however it is not too surprising to see that things are shifting to Phoenix's direction. He was also the prime choice of DC to play Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. He has most recently starred in Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here, Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot and Garth Davis's Mary Magdalene.
