Johnson urges Aung San Suu Kyi to help Rohingya refugees

Before the meeting, Mr Johnson said: "The plight of the Rohingya and the suffering they have had to endure is one of the most shocking humanitarian disasters of our time".

A Reuters investigation into the killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar prompted a demand from Washington for a credible probe into the bloodshed there and calls for the release of two journalists who were arrested while working on the report.

The two men face up to 14 years in prison on charges under a colonial-era Official Secrets Act of possessing classified documents.

The Myanmar government has faced global accusations of waging an ethnic cleansing campaign in Rakhine, with almost 700,000 Rohingya fleeing the area since last August amid reports of atrocities committed by troops and vigilante groups.

Action will be taken against 10 members of Myanmar's security forces in connection with the killing of captured Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

"I underlined the importance of the Burmese authorities carrying out a full and independent investigation into the violence in Rakhine, and to hold to account those responsible for human rights violations".

On Sunday Johnson and Suu Kyi "discussed in an open and friendly manner the latest developments in Rakhine State, including planning for the reception of returnees who fled", Myanmar's foreign ministry said in a Facebook post alongside photos of the pair meeting.

A Reuters special report published this week laid out events leading up to the killing of 10 Rohingya men from Inn Din village in northern Rakhine state who were buried in a mass grave after being hacked to death or shot by Buddhist neighbours and soldiers.

Myanmar and Bangladesh have signed a deal for the refugees to return home, but repatriation has not begun yet.

Visiting a border refugee camp, the Foreign Secretary said such a return would only be possible if a "political solution" could be found to remove the great danger from going back.

Mr Johnson and Ms Suu Kyi met after the Foreign Secretary visited Cox's Bazar, a huge refugee camp in Bangladesh where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled after the army crackdown in Rakhine.
