New York AG sues Harvey Weinstein following sexual misconduct allegations

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has filed a civil rights lawsuit against former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and The Weinstein Company.

The lawsuit alleges that the company broke NY law and violated the company's employees' rights by "failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination", Schneiderman said in a statement.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on Sunday he had filed the suit against the Weinstein Company, Mr Weinstein himself, and his brother Robert.

The civil lawsuit also claims that not only were the board and the company well aware of Weinstein's sexual predatory practices, but they also included an unusual provision in his contract that effectively monetized, rather than prohibited, ongoing acts of sexual harassment and misconduct, according to complaint.

The Weinstein Company and a spokeswoman for Harvey Weinstein were not immediately available for comment.

The suit also alleges that TWC repeatedly broke NY state law by failing to protect its employees from Weinstein's "unrelenting sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination".

"Every New Yorker has a right to a workplace free of sexual harassment, intimidation, and fear", the statement added.

It also casts doubt over a plan to sell the company to a group of investors. Schneiderman's complaint noted that the imminent sale of the company likely would leave victims without "adequate redress, including a lack of a sufficient victims compensation fund".

Harvey Weinstein, pictured at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on May 23, 2017 in Cap d'Antibes, France, was attacked at a restaurant.
