Jacob Zuma asked to step down as President

The ANC has made a decision to tell President Jacob Zuma to step down after he refused the top party leadership's request for him to resign voluntarily, according to five people familiar with the matter.

The ruling party's national executive committee recalled its former leader on Tuesday after his refusal to voluntarily step down.

Ramaphosa was elected ANC president in December, replacing Zuma.

Ramaphosa, the de facto president-in-waiting, has been in deadlocked negotiations with Zuma, who first dismissed a request from party leaders to resign more than a week ago. He is fighting the reinstatement of corruption charges that were dismissed before he became president over a 30 billion-rand (now £1.8 billion) government arms deal arranged in the late 1990s.

Zuma's presidency has been marred by corruption scandals, slow economic growth and record unemployment that have fuelled public anger.

Also Wednesday, police raided the home of prominent business associates of Zuma who are accused of being at the centre of corruption scandals that have infuriated the country, hurt the ANC's popularity and weakened the economy. Zuma has been part of the ANC for nearly six decades and led the intelligence arm of the movement's underground military wing.

"I think Jacob Zuma is nearly daring the ANC to remove him through a motion of no confidence because he knows that would be damaging for unity in the party", analyst Abdul Waheed Patel told AFP.

Zuma is already facing a no-confidence motion in parliament set for February 22 and brought by the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters.

An elite investigative unit dubbed the Hawks carried out the early morning raid on the compound of the wealthy Gupta family in an upscale neighborhood in Johannesburg.

South Africa's opposition parties want the national assembly to debate a motion of no confidence in Zuma this week and for parliament to be dissolved immediately after that ahead of an early election.

South African media is calling President Zuma's seemingly inevitable exit "Zexit".

They are known friends of 75-year-old President Zuma - and his son, daughter and one of the president's wives worked for the family's firms, media reports said.

"At the moment I can't speculate on what is he going to say", Magashule said.

The country's top court also ruled in 2016 that the President had violated the constitution when he used state funds to pay for multi-million dollar upgrades to his private home.

In an interview with state broadcaster SABC, Zuma delivered a rambling monologue in which he denied any wrongdoing.
