Facebook "losing young people to Snapchat"

Facebook

It's a worrying development for the social media giant. In 2018, less than half of USA teenagers are expected to logon to Facebook once per month.

Facebook's problem is due to SNapchat, which has doubled its take-up rate among social site users to 43%. Instagram is looking to grow to 18.4 million while rival platforms Snapchat and Twitter are set to grow to 16.2 million and 12.6 million respectively. Snapchat expects around 86.5 million US users.

The age group younger than 25 years old is typically considered Gen Z, while the cohort directly older are millennials.

The 50 million hours is equivalent to "2.14 minutes per daily user per day, or five percent of total time spent on Facebook", a TechCrunch report said.

"This year, for the first time, fewer than half of internet users aged 12 to 17-year will use Facebok", added the eMarketer. Facebook is still adding monthly users overall, and will reach 169.5 million this year growing by just under 1%. In August, the research firm predicted that in 2017 the 12 to 17 age group would decline 3.4%. Snapchat's popularity with teens and young adults has grown significantly since the platform first launched in 2011. The site was only expecting to lose a third of that number of users. It admitted in 2013 that young people were hanging out on Facebook less frequently.

"Facebook" has a "teen' problem", said Bill Fisher, eMarketer's United Kingdom senior analyst.

'There are now some early signs that younger social network users are being swayed by Snapchat'.

Teens still use Facebook a great deal, for whatever cause it may be, it is still a visited page, but, over the years and the increase of popular social media platforms, Facebook is definitely no longer seen as the most important or prestigious social network amongst this age group.

Part of its appeal is that it offers new and fun features such as filters or interactive maps that are particularly attractive to younger people.

It also explains Facebook's "copy and crush" strategy of dealing with competitors, one which has consistently been criticized by business analysts, technology columnists and Silicon Valley luminaries. Parents have not taken over Snapchat yet, which explains why some teens prefer the platform, but it could change soon. Before people start calling it the ultimate demise of Facebook, the social network now has more than 2 billion users around the world. Older users, with more money to spend, would help infuse Snap with much-needed revenue to continue its growth and innovation.

According to Debra Aho Williamson, a principal analyst at eMarketer, posts and messages on Snapchat disappear after a short time, which makes it fun for the younger age group.
