Trump's 2019 Budget Would Slash Great Lakes Funding

President Donald Trump again is trying reduce or eliminate federal funding for cleanups of some iconic USA waterways.

The Great Lakes program is the largest of the federal programs, receiving about $300 million a year since its 2010 launch. While walking back the immediacy of concerns by noting that the proposal is just that-a proposal-he noted it does show the administration's priorities don't align with those of the region.

"In Congress, both Republicans and Democrats have rejected President Trump's previous attempts to cut Great Lakes funding".

The GLRI is an inter-agency program created to address the most significant problems in the Great Lakes, and works to protect, restore, and maintain the Great Lakes ecosystem. Ohio Senator Rob Portman opposes the cuts for the ongoing initiative.

The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition consists of more than 150 environmental, conservation, outdoor recreation organizations, zoos, aquariums and museums representing millions of people, whose common goal is to restore and protect the Great Lakes.

Speaking broadly of the president's proposed budget in a statement, Democratic Sen. Last year, the president proposed a similar cut - from $300 million down to $10 million.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, called the cuts to GLRI unacceptable.

"It started with the idea that we had studied the Great Lakes to death, but there was very little money to actually do on-the-ground, shovels-in-the-mud projects to actually restore the Great Lakes and make them usable", Boyer said. Bill Huizenga, Michigan (R): "The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative plays a leading role in preserving and restoring the Great Lakes ecology while strengthening the Great Lakes economy". "Just like past year, I will fight alongside colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote, strengthen, and preserve our Great Lakes". Joyce is the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition co-chairman along with Rep. Rick Nolan, Minnesota.

But Congress decided otherwise, illustrating the popularity of the cleanups among lawmakers of both parties and voters who want progress on long standing problems.
