Man sets himself on fire after crashing into hospital: cops

A man, who crashed his vehicle into Middlesex Hospital Thursday morning and then set himself on fire is reportedly in critical condition. O'Brien shows the immediate aftermath of the crash.

A man who lives across from the hospital said he heard what sounded like an explosion and saw a man on fire come running out, screaming for help. According to authorities, Ellam intentionally lit himself on fire at the scene of the accident.

Twenty-seven-year-old Steven Ellam, of Middletown, was listed in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.

The suspect has always been known to local authorities, with a criminal record going back several years. "We evacuated patients from our ED to other parts of the hospital and they're all being attended to", Giuffrida said.

Middlesex Hospital is creeping back toward full service.

Middletown Mayor Dan drew tweeted investigators believe it was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.

Municipal, state and federal bomb squads checked the hospital and the suspect's residence, Police Chief William McKenna said.

He has been convicted of driving under the influence, criminal mischief and assault.

The hospital announced that as of 4 p.m., Friday, they would once again be providing emergency care, but only to walk-in patients. In 2013 he was also found guilty of attempting to strangle someone. However, he says that police are securing other public facilities in Middletown, including schools, out of an abundance of caution. Our Marlborough facility and our Westbrook facility are still open for business. "I was in my room. I found the volunteer coordinator and asked what was going on and she said that a vehicle had driven into the emergency room entrance and she just sent me home [because of the threat]". He said no threat was made to the hospital ahead of the incident.

Several fire departments were called for mutual aid.
