Walmart Offering Prepared Meal Kits

Walmart is rolling out its own line of meal kits to as many as 2,000 stores this year, the company said Monday.

The battle to lure grocery store shoppers is heating up between the world's largest retailers, Walmart and Amazon, which announced major moves within a day of each other.

Walmart's first exposure was in offering meal kits from third-party companies - California-based Takeout Kit and Chicago-based Home Chef - on its website beginning late previous year. It is offering three types of kits: pre-portioned meals that need to be cooked; ingredients that pair with its rotisserie chicken; or one-step dishes that just need to be heated up. The retail giant also is re-outfitting a dozen Sam's Club stores into distribution centers for Walmart's online grocery business. Meal kit recipes include, steak dijon and sweet chili chicken. "These delicious meals give the best or worst of cooks a fresh, easy option for dinner tonight, or later this week", said Tyler Lehr, Senior Vice President and general merchandise manager of deli services for Walmart U.S.

For Walmart, the meal push also may let it get more out of its deli section.

Last May, Amazon opened two test locations in Seattle that allow Amazon Prime subscribers to place a grocery order online and then pick it up at a drive-through window.

"It's a market that is consistent with growing food consumer preferences for fresh and healthy foods that require minimal preparation", Shea said in an email. The Walmart website has an expanded assortment of meal kits and other specialty items like snack boxes. "So these are products we're very comfortable with".
