Washington becomes first state to pass net neutrality law after FCC repeal

Internet service companies have argued consumers won't notice a change, but they also lobbied hard to eliminate net neutrality, arguing that fewer regulations will allow them to create new services. Under a nonprofit called the Coalition for Internet Openness, the companies said they filed a petition with the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit today requesting the court review the FCC's decision.

It also requires ISP's to publicly disclose "accurate information regarding the network management practices, performance characteristics and commercial terms of its broadband internet access services".

Today Washington state became the first state in the U.S.to sign a bill to protect an open internet.

Washington isn't the only state taking such action, even if it's the first to see it through to the finish line.

Inslee signed the bill Monday, which passed out of both the House and Senate with bipartisan support.

Although the FCC is in the process of rescinding the rule, most Americans are in favor of net neutrality. "It's allowed the free flow of information and ideas in one of the greatest demonstrations of free speech in our history". "Washington lawmakers are helping make sure that remains true".

The Washington State law, which goes into effect June 6, bars internet service providers from blocking websites or charging more for faster delivery of certain sites in a way that benefits the broadband company and partner websites. To date, there are at least 25 other governors across the country who are looking into their own net neutrality bills.

In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) formalized a long-standing policy with rules against blocking legal content, throttling traffic, and using paid prioritization for some traffic. "I'm proud that Washington state is helping lead the way to preserve these net neutrality rules, which ensure a level playing field for consumers and innovators".

On the other hand, federal law limits state authorities from regulating the internet.

With the publishing of the FCC's order in the Federal Register late last month, Congress has 60 days in which to pass a resolution of disapproval that would reverse the FCC action.
