Bay Area officials challenge lawsuit filed against California over immigration policies

"This is really unprecedented for the chief law enforcement officer of the United States to come out to California and act more like Fox News than a law enforcement officer".

Sessions also used his speech to sharply criticize Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf for warning the public about an unannounced raid by federal deportation officers recently in California.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions did not hold back Wednesday in Sacramento, California, as he formally announced a lawsuit against the Golden State over its failure to comport with federal laws on immigration.

Sessions said sanctuary laws "intentionally obstruct the work of our sworn immigration enforcement officers to intentionally use every power it has to undermine duly-established immigration law in America". Commonly known as sanctuary laws, those statutes, among other actions, prevent businesses from allowing federal immigration officers to enter their property without a warrant.

"The provisions of state law at issue have the goal and effect of making it more hard for federal immigration officers to carry out their responsibilities in California", Justice Department lawyers wrote, according to the Post. The Justice Department called the laws unconstitutional and asked a judge to block them.

Republican Assemblyman and gubernatorial candidate Travis Allen rejoiced over Sessions' lawsuit and subsequent California visit. In its lawsuit, the federal government argued that it forces the release of immigrants who have already shown a willingness to engage in criminal activity.

"We extended an invitation to speak at our event", Leveroni said in a phone interview Tuesday.

"This is basically going to war against the state of California", Gov. It was carried by state Senate leader Kevin de León, a candidate for U.S. Senate, who has led the anti-Trump resistance in the Legislature.

"So here's my message to Mayor Schaaf", Sessions added.

Schaaf issued an unusual public warning last month about an immigration operation in Northern California.

"There is no nullification; there is no secession", Sessions said.

In his speech, Session said he does not "want to be in this position of having to challenge these [California] laws" but that he can't sit by while the federal government is flouted. But it looks like he's directly taking on his new nemesis: the state of California.

The Democrat accused Sessions of lying and of trying to appease President Donald Trump.

"I understand that we have a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration, but the law is in the books and its purposes are clear and just".

Jerry Brown, Attorney General Xavier Becerra appear at a press conference in Sacramento, March 7, 2018.

"Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue by other means, with more difficulty in unsafe situations - all because of one irresponsible action", Sessions said.
