New York Giants cut cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

The Giants have informed veteran Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie that he will be released, the Daily News has confirmed.

It was mentioned earlier this week, by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, that the Giants were in the process of moving Rodgers-Cromartie from cornerback to free safety, because of a new defensive coordinator James Bettcher's defensive scheme.

Rodgers-Cromartie was a first-round draft pick (No. 16 overall) of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008.

After trading for linebacker Alec Ogletree, the Giants found themselves in need of creating cap space, and released Rodgers-Cromartie one day after asking him to take a "significant" pay cut from the $6.5 million that he was due to make in 2018.

This past season, Rodgers-Cromartie played in 15 games, producing 31 tackles, 1 pass defense and 1 sack. However, he saw his status as a starter reduced during last season as he was supplanted by Eli Apple in the Giants secondary.

However, Rodgers-Cromartie, who turns 32 next month, is coming off a 2017 campaign that included just one pass defensed and no interceptions for the second time in his 10-year career. He followed up with six interceptions in 2016 and earned second-team All-Pro honours.

Previous year was a rough one for Rodgers-Cromartie, who saw his playing time decrease, and who was suspended after clashing with the coaching staff.
