European powers propose new Iran sanctions to meet Trump ultimatum

The president is considered about the deal's "sunset clauses" as well as about Iran's ballistic missile program.

"In case some European countries are following steps to put non-nuclear sanctions against Iran in order to please the American president, they will be making a big mistake and they will see the direct result of that on the nuclear deal", Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was quoted as saying in state-run media according to the Reuters news agency.

A State Department cable obtained by Reuters last month, however, outlined a path under which the three key European allies would simply commit to try to improve the deal over time in return for Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing USA sanctions relief in May.

Iran's ambassador to UK and member of the Iranian negotiating team, Hamid Baeidinejad, wrote on his Twitter account: "At the meeting of the Joint Commission for the Nuclear Agreement, the United States in exchange other countries' cooperation, was under pressure and isolation more than ever". Pompeo "is certain to advise the president to withdraw the United States from our obligations under the nuclear agreement", said Diplomacy Works, a group of mainly former Obama administration officials that lobbies for staying in the deal.

Many of those sanctions, including those that used to target Iran's banking system, have been technically lifted but companies still refrain from engaging in major deals with Iran as they fear a U.S. reprisal.

Since the nuclear deal entered into force, the committee holds a meeting every three months to discuss the course of implementation, and this was the last meeting before May 12, when US President will announce whether he would ratify the agreement.

With Rex Tillerson out at the State Department, the Iran nuclear deal is likely toast. "This country is not very dependable". Although they disagreed on many foreign policy issues, Trump mentioned only the Iran deal in explaining why he thought it was time for Tillerson to go.

As US President Donald Trump's deadline of May 12 for Iran deal revisions approaches, the European Union is striving to keep the agreement alive.

Rex Tillerson, who was sacked Tuesday as secretary of state, always concluded that Iran was complying as global monitors have reported, although not in its "spirit".

But Corker said he doesn't think backing out of the Iran deal will impact any negotiations with North Korea.

Analysts say the nuclear agreement, touted at the time as a breakthrough reducing the risk of a devastating wider war in the Middle East, could collapse if Washington pulls out.

On Monday, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said it could resume its production of highly enriched uranium, which it shelved under the deal, within two days.

The talks in Vienna on Friday, a regular review of the accord, involved Iran and the six other signatories.

The nuclear deal's terms did not cover ballistic missile activity.
