Shooting erupts at Great Mills High School in Maryland

The shooter shot a male student and a female student at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, and was then wounded by a campus security officer, county Sheriff Timothy Cameron told MSNBC.

A student who opened fire at a Maryland high school died Tuesday morning, the police said.

St Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said the student with the handgun was declared dead at a hospital, and the other two students were in critical condition.

But if Gaskill's shot stopped him, the deputy would be only the second resource officer to gun down an active school shooter since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, according to a year-long Washington Post analysis of dozens of school shootings. Last month, Hogan pledged emergency legislation in the form of a $125 million commitment for capital improvements to make Maryland's schools safer from violence like school shootings and added another $50 million annually to pay for school resource officers, counselors and technology, but legislators have not yet taken action- something Hogan said Tuesday is "outrageous".

Under the banner #ENOUGH, tens of thousands of USA high school students walked out of classrooms around the country on March 14 to protest gun violence.

Less than half an hour after the shooting, parents were gathering in a school parking lot across from the front entrance, and exchanging cellphone messages with their children.

The officer was not harmed, Cameron said. He said he believes momentum is building for reform, fueled by student activism.

The students were transported by bus to Leonardtown High School where they were picked up by parents and guardians.

Gaskill, Sheriff Cameron said at the time, "used exemplary judgment" in the situation, in which "realistic, relevant and constant training obviously paid off".

Maryland state governor Larry Hogan said today's shooting should be a "call to action" for greater school safety. "I've never heard people sound so scared", one student said.

"Schools must be the most hardened targets in this country", said one of the Tweets, quoting NRA President Wayne LaPierre.

Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., said at a minimum, universal background checks and a ban on assault-style weapons are needed.

Numerous students held signs reading "Never again" and "End gun violence".

Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer praised the first responders, saying the officer at the school "answered the call this morning with swiftness, professionalism, and courage".

The sheriff's office on the scene is working with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as well as FBI agents from the Baltimore office.

"No question that his actions, his quick and immediate actions, potentially saved a great number of lives", Cameron said of Gaskill.
