Trump was warned not to congratulate Putin. He congratulated Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he called Russia President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his election victory and suggested the two leaders would meet shortly.

Sitting in the Oval Office, he said: "I suspect we'll probably be meeting in the not too distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control, but we will never allow anybody to have anything even close to what we have". Trump said the call with Putin was "a very good call", and he added that he would be meeting with the Russian leader "in the not-too-distant future".

Trump is not the first commander in chief to call Putin to congratulate him on winning reelection.

The notecards are similar to the one Trump was photographed clutching during a White House meeting with students and parents after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, officials said. The election was tainted by reports of voting irregularities.

The Kremlin said their conversation was constructive, businesslike and focused on overcoming the accumulated problems in Russia-US relations.

The White House declined to comment to the Post on Trump's briefing materials, and the story noted that officials said it was not clear if Trump read the notes.

But the two leaders did not discuss Russia's interference in the 2016 United States election or the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, the former double agent targeted with a nerve agent in the UK.

"We don't get to dictate how other countries operate", Sanders said.

"President Trump congratulated President Putin on his March 18 re-election, and emphasized the importance of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula", the statement continued.

"We will do everything to resolve all the differences with our partners using political and diplomatic channels", Putin said Monday.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying that the two leaders didn't discuss the poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Britain.

In a statement about the call between the two leaders, the Kremlin described diplomatic problems facing Russian Federation and the USA and confirmed Putin's intent to meet with Trump.

After his victory Sunday, Putin struck a conciliatory tone in his celebratory remarks where he insisted that the priority for his new term would be economic growth and improving domestic conditions ahead of defense and security spending. Three of Trump's associates - former national security adviser Michael Flynn, deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and campaign aide George Papadopoulos - have pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and agreed to cooperate. It's disheartening at a time when our trans-Atlantic partners really need a boost.

"Everyone is trying to figure out what does this mean", Wright said.

Republican U.S. Senator John McCain chastised Trump for the congratulatory call.

"I think it's great".
