Koreas Hold Summit Prep Talks Next Week

Informal talks held in Finland among North Korean, South Korean and USA delegates ended Wednesday, the Finnish foreign ministry said, describing the talks as constructive.

Last summer he wrote in the same paper that the US should obviously seek South Korea's agreement before using force, but no foreign government, even a close ally, can veto an action to protect Americans from North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Kim told visiting South Korean officials that he would meet with Moon in late April as the rival nations moved to improve relations amid rising tensions over the North's nuclear weapons program. The summit also comes ahead of the face-to-face meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the North's Kim that is expected to take place by the end of May to work out a deal to end the North's nuclear weapons' deal.

The announcement comes a day after South Korean President Moon Jae-in floated the possibility of another meeting - Washington, Pyongyang and Seoul, CNN reported.

Cho and Ri met at Panmunjom on January 9 to hold the two Koreas' first formal talks in more than two years to discuss the North's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and ways to improve bilateral ties.

The Unification Ministry in Seoul said Minister Cho Myoung-gyon will lead the South's three-member delegation to the meeting in the village of Panmunjom on the North-South border.

North and South Korea agreed Saturday to hold high-level talks next week to prepare for a summit between their two leaders, according to the South's presidential office.

The timing and size of the annual maneuvers are especially sensitive this year because of heightened worry over the North's accelerated work last year on a nuclear-armed missile potentially capable of reaching the United States.

It would be only the third inter-Korean summit as the countries remain technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

The lack of North Korean confirmation that Kim was willing to meet Trump to talk about denuclearization has only exacerbated those doubts. North Korea has been notified of the schedule "as well as the defensive nature" of the exercises, the Pentagon said.

In a statement, South Korea's Unification Ministry said the talks were slated for March 29, reports CNN.
