Mayor, police chief announce internal investigation beginning in Alton Sterling shooting

Paul said they will review Landry's decision and provided the next steps in the case at this point. Salamoni's lawyer, John McLindon, said he anticipated the department will fire both officers for a violation of policies as a result of the shooting, but that both officers are planning to appeal such firing.

Louisiana's attorney general has ruled out criminal charges against two white Baton Rouge police officers in the fatal shooting of a black man whose death fueled widespread protests.

Alton Sterling, 37, was shot and killed by police in Baton Rouge in July 2016.

Castile, a school cafeteria worker and licensed gun owner, was fatally shot during a traffic stop by St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who said the victim was reaching for his gun. It also claims poor training and inadequate police procedures led to Sterling's death.

In a familiar story line with such cases, the officers say Sterling was reaching for his gun - a contention that witnesses dispute. In a summary of its findings, the Justice Department said Salamoni pointed his gun at Sterling's head but didn't mention any verbal threats by the officer.

Sterling was shot and killed by police outside a convenience store in 2016.

Sterling's family and activists urged Landry to pick up the case and file state charges against the officers since federal authorities declined to prosecute them.

Last year, the Department of Justice decided not to press federal civil-rights charges against the officers.

Veda Washington-Abusaleh, Sterling's aunt, was in tears after meeting with Landry.

Only a handful of people were at the Triple S Food Mart less than two hours after Attorney General Jeff Landry on Tuesday announced his decision in the investigation of Alton Sterling's death.

After the Justice Department said in May 2017 it would not pursue charges, Landry said he would launch a state probe into the shooting.

The same report also said Sterling's autopsy showed he had been shot six times - three times in the chest and three more times in his back - and all six bullets were recovered from his body.

During a news conference Tuesday, Quinyetta McMillon said the way the officers killed Alton Sterling was "in cold blood".

The Attorney General released a report on the full investigation into Alton Sterling's death. This was a family man.

"The people of this parish have been civil in their reaction to a long and frustrating process from federal and state authorities and now of course citizens of this parish have every right to peacefully and publicly protest", she said.

Moments later, the officers wrestled Sterling to the ground, at which time he was shot.

Attorneys for Sterling's relatives have said federal authorities told them Salamoni pointed a gun at Sterling's head and threatened to kill him before the struggle began.

He supported calls for the Baton Rouge Police Department to conduct a review to determine if disciplinary action should be taken. The next day Philando Castile was shot and killed in Minnesota by police officer and the aftermath was streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend.
