Uber settles with victim's family after fatal self-driving vehicle crash

The woman was killed when she was hit by the vehicle while crossing a dark road, pushing her bicycle, in Arizona.

A spokesperson for Uber declined to comment.

The incident comes as Uber, which has invested heavily in self-driving technology, tries to rebuild a reputation marred by scandals involving data breaches and a toxic workplace culture.

Uber's cars in Arizona "were struggling" before the accident, The Times reported.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators examine the Uber vehicle involved in a fatal accident in Tempe, Arizona.

And Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey - who turned the state into a virtual test track for the industry by strictly limiting regulations - wrote to Uber's CEO, saying saying he expected companies developing self-driving technology to make safety their top priority.

E-mails, however, show that Uber started testing self-driving cars in Arizona several months earlier.

California's Department of Motor Vehicles also sent Uber's public affairs manager Austin Heyworth a letter on March 27 stating Uber will not be allowed to test its autonomous vehicles on roads in the state as of March 31, because of not renewing the permit.

On Wednesday, the governor's office did not substantively answer Ars' questions about the nature of its relationship with Uber, referring us instead to a two-page "point-by-point" rebuttal of The Guardian's story.

Other footage showed the human driver behind the wheel mostly looking down and not at the road in the seconds before the accident, which was the first ever death by an autonomous vehicle.

Besides, Arizona doesn't require Uber or any other operator to report on test drives. The governor's office said it provided the emails to the newspaper in September. Another five state governors have issued executive orders, including Arizona, according to the NCSL. Experts told The Associated Press that the technology on Uber's auto should have spotted (name her) the pedestrian and the failure revealed a serious flaw.

Uber's newer Volvo test vehicles only use a single, roof-mounted lidar, along with 10 radars and seven cameras, Reuters found. The company said in a statement that it decided not to reapply for the California permit "with the understanding that our self-driving vehicles would not operate in the state in the immediate future".

Uber has about 200 vehicles at all four testing locations.
