Queen's husband Prince Philip hospitalized for hip surgery

The 96-year-old was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday, April 3, for previously scheduled hip surgery, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

It said that the hospital admission and surgery were planned ahead of time.

"His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow", a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Officials declined to provide additional details about the surgery and said "further updates will be issued when appropriate".

On Thursday, Philip was to have appeared with his 91-year-old wife at the Royal Maundy Service at Leicester Cathedral in central England and attend a reception and lunch afterwards.

The prince announced in May that he was retiring from most public duties after decades of royal service.

Prince Philip was also absent at Easter services with the Queen on Sunday at St. George's Chapel, which is the venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in May. The royal has suffered from several health issues in recent years, including a brief hospitalization last June.

"What is most important is someone's fitness, as in their heart and lung fitness, how much exercise they do and how well nourished they are".

Officially, Queen Elizabeth has supported Prince Philip's decision to retire.

The Royal Family veteran had announced his retirement from all public duties as the Duke of Edinburgh in May, 2017 owing to his age.
