At least 15 dead in Taliban attack on 'safe' district in Afghanistan

The attack comes a day after Taliban fighters raided a district government compound in the southeastern province of Ghazni, killing at least seven people, including the local governor.

A local officer says a Taliban attack in western Herat province has murdered 10 authorities and injured four.

"They (Taliban) came and set fire to the district governor's office, killed 30 people, took some equipment of the district with them".

Most civilians were killed by insurgents, and fewer people were killed by pro-government security forces than previously, said the United Nations quarterly report.

The attack in the Khuja Omari district was the latest insurgent assault in Ghazni province, which is now largely under Taleban control.

.

Provincial officials said on April 12 that police and intelligence officers were also among those killed in the overnight raid on the Khwaja Omari district headquarters in Ghazni Province.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack in Paktia in a text message sent to the media.

Ghazni's Khawaja Omari district was considered one of the province's safest districts.

The district governor, Shukrullah Shaker, said a roadside mine and a rocket hit a vehicle carrying police reinforcements sent to the scene, killing the police commander.

Deputy police chief of Ghazni Ramazan Ali said 50 Taliban militants were also killed in the clash.

The Taliban on Thursday afternoon had stormed a government chemical in a middle province, tripping an hours-long gunbattle that murdered 1-5, comprising three top rated officials. Nine other security personnel were also wounded.
