Russian Federation blocks Telegram app over security concerns

Telegram filed legal challenges in multiple courts.

"There are a lot of messaging services, Telegram is a very convenient one, we have been using it to communicate with journalists", Peskov said last week. According to a blog post attributed to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, the app has built-in workarounds for such bans. The access to Telegram will be denied and there won't be technical conditions for sending messages, reported the Russian news agency TASS. The decision can be appealed within 30 days.

The regulator sought to dam the app after the company refused at hand over encryption keys used to scramble messages.

The Roskomnadzor telecoms watchdog, which brought the case, had earlier demanded that the service be blocked as soon as the verdict was announced. However, Russia's FSB Federal Security service demanded access to some of those messages to track down potential terrorist attacks.

The FSB has claimed that global terrorist groups actively use Telegram's secret chats with high levels of encryption. Telegram has previous agreed to register with the Russian government as an information distributor, but drew the line at giving encryption keys to the FSB. This prompted the court action.

On Friday morning, the court ruled that Telegram's refusals were illegal and ordered the messenger service to be blocked.

Durov wrote on Telegram that "privacy is not for sale", adding that "at Telegram, we have the luxury of not caring about revenue streams or ad sales".

The company is registered in the Virgin Islands.

The free application, which lets people exchange messages, photos and videos in groups of up to 5,000 people, has attracted more than 200 million users since its launch in 2013. The Initial Coin Offering (ICO) raised funds which will be used to create a blockchain network that processes transactions a lot faster. He added, however, that he still can not guarantee that Telegram users will retain access to the messenger without using VPNs.

Russian Federation isn't the only issue dogging Telegram.

As various local news outlets report, the decision by the Tagansky District Court in Moscow means that the Kremlin's internet monitoring organization Roskomnadzor will now force domestic ISPs to block access to Telegram "in the near future".

In 2006, President Vladimir Putin signed several laws which were aimed to help in the fight against terrorism.
