Juventus Star Slams 'Unsurprising' Decision to Award Controversial Real Madrid Penalty

Controversy reigned at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, as Cristiano Ronaldo's stoppage-time penalty put Real Madrid into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Juventus.

Ronaldo's coolly taken 97th-minute penalty into the top corner came after Medhi Benatia brought down Lucas Vazquez in the box.

Gianluigi Buffon's final Champions League hurrah: Buffon saw his night end in a sour note after being sent off for shoving referee Michael Oliver.

Madrid beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate, courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo victor from the penalty spot in the 97th minute. After Barcelona let a 4-1 first-leg lead slip away to Roma on Tuesday to crash out of the Champions League in humiliating fashion, Real Madrid nearly followed them with an even worse capitulation on Wednesday.

Midfielder Luka Modric has also been omitted from Zinedine Zidane's 19-man group for the trip to La Rosaleda.

Juventus had become the first-ever side to come back from 3-0 behind away from home in the Champions League knockout stages.

Gareth Bale is still insistent Real Madrid remains the best place for him to be despite being upset at being taken off at half time during their Champions League quarterfinal clash with Juventus. "We deserved to go through to the semis, which is what interests me most".

He told a pre-match press conference: "Malaga are bottom and maybe they don't deserve to be there. We did not play well, we must admit it, and it should be a lesson for the future", he said.

Ronaldo has now scored in 11 straight Champions League matches, a run which stretches to last season's final in Cardiff against the Bianconeri.

"It wasn't an issue of VAR, because the referee still needs to have courage and a conscience", said the 33-year-old.

I knew we would be up against it, but I didn't expect what happened in the first minute. "We could've scored five or six goals tonight, so we ought to be proud".

Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus goalkeeper: "To award such a doubtful, or super doubtful penalty, just ahead of the final whistle and destroy the work of a team who gave absolutely everything, you have to have a trash bin instead of your heart".
