Amazon adds another Echo to the family

Amazon adds another Echo to the family

After leaked images turned up showing a cube-shaped device that seemed to fit the bill, people started referring to this still as-of-yet unannounced device as the "Fire TV Cube".

While Amazon's Vesta robot project is still a new one, the demand for such technology in the home is not entirely fresh.

The Amazon Echo Spot looks more like a bedside clock and the circular display is capable of displaying a variety of information including the weather update, clock, and also video content. It will not replace the existing Fire TV Stick, which will remain as the budget-friendly model for those who don't need support for 4K or HDR video. Lab126 is Amazon division and the brainchild behind devices like Fire tablets, Fire TV set-top-boxes and Echo speakers.

The first of the two new devices was a standard dongle which would connect to a TV via a dedicated HDMI cable.

As well as being able to stream live TV, today's consumers demand catch up TV ability and again, although Fire TV devices carry a limited number of apps for on-demand viewing, recording functionality would make sense. The leaked image from a year ago appears to show the device as having far-field microphones, a built-in speaker and an LED light indicator. This will essentially enable you to use the Alexa voice assistant without having to switch on your TV.

"Echo Spot combines the popular design of the Echo Dot with the added benefit of a display", said Jayshree Gururaj, Director - Amazon Devices. The device is also expected to arrive with its own voice remote, which features a microphone button to trigger and interact with Alexa. For instance, a user can simply say, "Alexa, call dad", or "Alexa, send a message to Vinay". It was believed that Amazon launched the page by accident, giving a quick hint at what was to come.

Amazon has published job adverts on its job page which reveal it's looking for a "software engineer, robotics" and "principle sensors engineer".

Amazon is teasing a new Fire TV device called Fire TV Cube. The device also includes a familiar blue LED light bar that is common to all of Amazon's Alexa devices.
