Arsenal's Arsene Wenger: I have a high opinion of Luis Enrique

Arsenal's Arsene Wenger: I have a high opinion of Luis Enrique

The fiery Argentine has been touted as possible replacement for outgoing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, and the home crowd will be keeping a close eye on both him and his team this evening.

Former Arsenal captains such as Mikael Arteta and Patrick Vieira have been linked succeeding Wenger and there is also talk that Arsenal could look to rope in a big name coach. And even though there's a general feeling that Wenger would have preferred to stay in the job a while longer, he insisted that he wants the next manager to be more successful than he has been. "But, if the question is as simple as, 'Are you ready to manage any teams in Europe?' then I would say yes".

"[There is a] need to make the right decision, even if you have to be bold".

Having initially been ruled out of the Europa League semi-final first leg with a hamstring injury, Costa recovered sufficiently to travel to London with Atletico Madrid, the Mirror newspaper has reported.

The Gunners meanwhile are in the process of discussing Wenger's successor, with former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique the current front runner after Massimiliano Allegri, Joachim Löw and Diego Simeone all distanced themselves from the job. Arteta has been highly praised for his work at the Etihad, and would be a popular choice to take over from Wenger, who signed him as a player in 2011.

"But the reality is that he was at Arsenal, he was the champion and I came to the country in 2004 and wanted to steal his title". The silverware will help him walk out with his head held high, amid rumours that his resignation was prompted by the club management planning to sack him in the summer.

They beat Milan again in this year's Europa League, of course, but there's no denying that the Rossoneri are not the force they once were. "No I have not spoken with anyone at Arsenal regarding the position because I love it here at Atletico and I am very happy", Simeone told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

A triumph in this tournament would also mean qualification for next season's Champions League, which will be a bonus for whoever replaces the Frenchman.

"I want to do this for [the players], to achieve something with them, because I feel they have a special mental quality".

The former Arsenal captain and France worldwide told Britain's The Times in an interview that he was "honoured" to have his name mentioned among the possible candidates to succeed Arsene Wenger as manager.
