Senate Confirms Pro-Life Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State

KEVIN DIETSCH/UPI/NewscomThe U.S. Senate voted this afternoon to confirm former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the Trump administration's secretary of state.

U.S. lawmakers confirmed Mike Pompeo as the country's top diplomat in a tight vote Thursday.

Pompeo has been installed after US President Donald Trump chose to replace previous State Secretary Rex Tillerson over policy disputes and clashes with the president.

Senator Roberts also joined Senator Bob Dole (R-Kan.) in introducing Pompeo before his confirmation hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this month. Rather than renegotiating the deal, Pompeo said, "Congress must act to change Iranian behavior, and, ultimately, the Iranian regime". "I look forward to working him and I am confident that he will successfully advance US interests overseas, including the promotion of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law". John Feeley, the USA ambassador to Panama, said in his resignation letter he was quitting because of Trump, Reuters reported in January.

Many opponents also anxious that Pompeo would fail to serve as a counterbalance to what one Democratic senator called Trump's "worst instincts".

Pompeo will be on a two-day travel to Brussels from April 26 to April 27, where he will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and participate in the NATO Foreign Ministerial, during which Allies will discuss preparations for Julys NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government meeting, she said.

The former Kansas Republican Congressman, who grew close to President Trump while at the Central Intelligence Agency, takes over at the State Department as the United States faces a wide range of foreign policy challenges. Grenell's nomination had been languishing in the Senate since it was sent in September with many Democrats criticizing some of the conservative Republican's positions.

"From North Korea's nuclear threats to Iran's aggression, Mike's confirmation as Secretary of State comes at a critical time for USA foreign policy", said Ed Royce (R-CA), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The votes come after a Trump tweet Monday when the President called on the Senate to quickly approve the nominees.

Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, said Pompeo brings a wealth of experience to the job.

Sen. Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the foreign relations panel, was a vocal opponent of Pompeo's confirmation, but said he did not think the bruising confirmation fight would leave Pompeo wounded.

Soon Pompeo will be sworn in. Acting Secretary of State John Sullivan was originally scheduled to take the trip starting Thursday but was expected to defer to Pompeo instead.

Throughout the confirmation process, Republicans and even some media outlets criticized opposition from Democrats, saying Pompeo was qualified for the position and should be confirmed.

"I realize my Democratic friends in many cases feel like that in supporting Pompeo, it's a proxy for support of the Trump administration policies, which many of them abhor".

That instability-and Iran's maneuvering to fill a power vacuum in the heart of the Middle East-falls squarely on the shoulders of the United States. In the North Korean capital he met with leader Kim Jong Un ahead of the planned meeting with Trump, expected in late May or June.
