Million People A Year Die From Air Pollution

Air pollution across the United Kingdom is linked to around 40,000 early deaths each year, and is draining 20 billion pounds ($27.5 billion) a year from the economy.

Fresh data from the United Nations health body showed that every corner of the globe is dealing with air pollution, although the problem is far worse in poorer countries.

On some days, the air pollution in Srinagar is worse than that of Delhi and overall as bad as Kolkata.

Late previous year, Greenpeace India, as part of its Airpocalypse-II Report, had complied data from 280 cities across the country.

The report said seven million people a year worldwide are dying due to poor air quality, and nine out of 10 people are exposed to levels of air pollution which are unsafe to their health.

Additional coverage of the WHO Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution Database is available from BBC News, CBS News, The Guardian, Healio, The Hill, and Xinhua News.

In the United Kingdom the fine particles are largely produced by soot and traffic emissions that with other forms of air pollution have been linked to 40,000 premature deaths.

According to the World Health Organization, countries are taking measures to reduce air pollution from particulate matter, citing that the annual median exposure to ambient PM2.5 in China was 48.8 μg/m3 in 2016, marking a 17 percent reduction from the estimate for 2012, but still nearly five times higher than World Health Organization recommendations.

"It is unacceptable that over 3 billion people ― majority women and children ― are still breathing deadly smoke every day from using polluting stoves and fuels in their homes", Dr Tedros said.

"These figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that as a country we still have a long way to go in the fight against air pollution, with several United Kingdom cities exceeding the air quality standards needed to protect health".

In total, air pollution caused about 4.2 million deaths in 2016, it added. According to experts, the main sources of air pollution by particles are the inefficient use of energy in homes, industry, agriculture, transport and coal power plants.

Seven million people are killed annually by breathing in unsafe levels of air pollutants, according to the report. It is followed by low-income and middle-income countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Europe, and the Americas. It has contested the count of air pollution deaths in India by global agencies, noting that they are based on estimations and not on primary data from the country.

Delhi is Most Polluted City in the World; Mumbai is on 4th Numbers: You all should know that Pollution is one of the most risky and unwelcomed problems not just for India but for the whole world. Now the government is preparing a new three year plan that will set out new targets and measures to "win the battle to defend blue skies", according to the environment minister.
