Yankees and Red Sox to play in London next year

Baseball will be coming to London when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox face each other in two regular-season games at the Olympic Stadium in 2019.

Boston will play as the home team in the first Major League Baseball games to be held in Europe, on June 29 and June 30, 2019.

In recent years baseball has ventured away from the U.S., playing games in Australia and Japan, so this is not a first trip overseas for the sport synonymous with the States.

Today's announcement was said to be "years in the making" with regular discussions held between Red Sox principal owner John Henry and Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner. Two games in London, next June 29th and 30th. "It won't just be a great live experience for those who get a ticket for the London Stadium, but also I am sure that the match, the game on TV or radio or on the web will be fantastic as well". They are aware they'll be a part of history, but they also know these games count.

"I am absolutely delighted that we have secured this historic agreement for Major League Baseball to come to London in 2019 and 2020". There were significant challenges that had to be overcome.

"We are bringing you one of the best rivalries in baseball", MLS Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Tuesday. "I can't wait to hear someone shout "play ball" at London Stadium". This series will surely be the most significant global event to date for Major League ball.

"They've been fighting it out for over a hundred years", Henry said about the Red Sox and the Yankees. "We expect an exciting and intense pair of games and appreciate the significance of representing our sport in such a meaningful way".

"The great thing about London is there are various sporting events taking place every day of the week", Khan told ESPN.

The rivalry between two of the sport's most successful teams stretches back more than a century and is widely regarded as the most passionate in baseball.
