Emmanuel Macron, Donald Trump discuss 'peace and stability in Middle East'

Many major global conflicts are happening "at Europe's doorstep", said Dr Merkel, who expressed concern about the risk of war between Israel and Iran over Syria.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe can no longer count on the United States for military protection and must "take its destiny into its own hands". "Europe needs to take his own destiny into their own hands, and this is our task for the future", said Merkel.

The escalation came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had decided the pull the U.S. out of a landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Recall, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured that the partners will continue to make every effort for the restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Germany, France and Britain are planning a foreign ministerial meeting with Iran to discuss how to respond to the recent developments in the Middle East.

Germany must wean itself off the "fetish" of fiscal conservatism if it has ambitions to become a leading force for European renewal, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday.

Israel has said its strikes in Syria were in response to the attacks against the Golan Heights, which it blamed on Iran. Merkel supported Macron's call for pan-European universities and common migration policy, but limited her comments on the euro to saying "we need a stable and sustainable" monetary system.

"It is clear that last night's incidents are part of a new context in the Middle East, where what we feared happening is becoming reality: the Syrian and Iranian issues are becoming intertwined", Le Drian told BFM TV. "Other powers, just as sovereign as us, have decided not to respect their own word".
