Australia probes Google over user data

However, as per a statement from Google, the practice of collecting data from Androids is not only common but easily able to be opted-out-of by mobile users. But it said the spokesman had claimed that users could see what data was collected if they went to the My Account tab in Settings and they could also control it.

In news that should be taken with a grain of salt, computer technology company Oracle has made claims to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) Digital Platforms Inquiry that Google is tracking Android phones and then using customers own data allowances to report it back to their servers. The ACCC was already investigating Google and Facebook's impact on the advertising market.

The Oracle experts say phone owners' data ends up being consumed even if Google Maps is not in use or aeroplane mode is switched on.

"The ACCC met with Oracle and is considering information it has provided about Google services".

"Most consumers do not understand the level, granularity, and reach of Google's data collection, and there are serious questions about whether they have provided their informed consent and maintain a reasonable ability to avoid participating in this collection", the senators wrote. This reportedly contains location info, even the place location providers are turned off, with no apps put in, and the place no SIM card is inserted.

With the EU General Data Protection Regulation set to come into force in just 11 days' time Google could also face further privacy investigations in Europe.

"We are exploring how much consumers know about the use of location data and are working closely with the privacy commissioner".

"Any charges for transmission of data over a cellular connection, including any location-related data, would be governed by a user's mobile carrier plan", Google said in a statement.

Earlier this year, social media giant Facebook apologized after Web marketing firm Cambridge Analytica was accused of obtaining users' data without permission for the 2016 election campaign of US President Donald Trump.

USA software company Oracle has always been involved in a dispute with Google over the infringed use of Oracle's Java intellectual property. Now, Google is being investigated for allegedly tracking Android phone users.

Australian telecoms said they were seeking confirmation from Google on the allegations.
