Taiwan seeks 'correction' after Air Canada lists Taipei as part of China

U.S. clothing retailer Gap apologised late Monday for selling T-shirts with an "incorrect" map of China, after it became the latest among foreign companies that China has taken offence with in relation to its territorial claims. "ORCRP006320-topic.html" class="local_link" >Gap is the latest company to apologize to China for failing to reflect Beijing's territorial claims - on a map shown on a T-shirt for sale in North America.

The printed map did not include Taiwan, a self-ruled island considered Chinese territory by Beijing, the capital.

The apology came after a person posted pictures of the T-shirt on Chinese social media network Weibo, saying that Chinese-claimed territories, including south Tibet, the island of Taiwan and the South China Sea were indeed omitted.

Gap issued an apology late Monday on its Weibo account, saying it "respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China". "We are doing internal checks to correct the mistake as soon as possible", Gap said.

The company said it strictly abides by Chinese law and will devote itself to greater scrutiny to avoid similar errors in the future.

In the statement sent to the Global Times, Gap said the T-shirt has been pulled off shelves in the Chinese market and destroyed.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang took note of the apology and would not say at a press briefing whether the government had complained to Gap.

In January 2018, China shut down the websites of hotel chain Marriott International after the company listed Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as individual nations on an online customer survey.

Fashion brand Zara and Delta Air Lines drew Beijing's ire and apologized for listing Taiwan and/or Tibet as countries on drop-down menus on their websites.

The Chinese Civil Aviation Administration had sent a notice to 36 foreign airlines, including a number of U.S. carriers, on April 25, asking them to comply with Beijing's standards, according to the White House.

In January, Chinese authorities blocked Marriott's websites and apps for nearly a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and applications.
