The president talks North Korea after meeting with Joshua Holt

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on June 7 ahead of an expected summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12, it was announced Wednesday.

Kim Yong Chol would become the highest-ranking official from the isolated nation to visit the USA since 2000, when Pyongyang sent Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok to meet then-President Bill Clinton.

Sanctioned by US, General Kim Yong-chol will hold talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as preparations are underway for a historic nuclear summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

"I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Following conciliatory remarks from the North, Trump reversed course and suggested he could still meet with Kim to discuss the dismantlement of the regime's nuclear weapons program. "It will happen!" Trump added.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who has lobbied hard for nuclear negotiations between Trump and Kim, met with the North Korean leader in a surprise meeting on Saturday in an effort to keep the summit alive. They allowed Moon to push for a U.S. Two weeks of hard-nosed negotiating, including a communications blackout by the North and a public cancellation by the USA, appeared to be paying off as the two sides engaged in their most substantive talks to date about the meeting. The US has banned its citizens from entering North Korea, which has a history of detaining US citizens.

"What Kim is unclear about is that he has concerns about whether his country can surely trust the United States over its promise to end hostile relations (with North Korea) and provide a security guarantee if they do denuclearisation", Mr Moon said.

The White House said Kim is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who recently twice visited Pyongyang. Pentagon official Randall Schriver is also in Seoul now, the Post said.

Russian Federation said Wednesday that its foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, will travel to North Korea for talks on Thursday. Moon said Kim is still committed to "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

Moon acknowledged Pyongyang and Washington may have differing expectations of what denuclearization means and he urged both sides to hold working-level talks to resolve their differences. "We should be eating a hamburger on a conference table, and we should make better deals with China and others", Trump said at the time.

Pyongyang has claimed its ICBMs are capable of reaching the United States.

Mr Kim Chang Son, the de facto chief of staff, flew to Singapore via Beijing, the report said.

American officials are skeptical that Kim will ever fully abandon his nuclear arsenal.

"However, during the U.S".

"We're doing very well in terms of the summit with North Korea", Trump said at the White House.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim leaves a hotel in Seoul on Tuesday.

Trump briefly scrapped the talks last week, citing "open hostility" from the North, but since then both sides have dialled down the rhetoric and the process appears to be back on track.

The Trump administration said that US officials traveled to Singapore on Sunday to plan for the previously planned leaders meeting. One can cross the border simply by stepping across a painted line, but moving beyond several footsteps into the North at Panmunjom would be rare for US officials.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed by NATO-backed militants in 2011 after halting his nascent nuclear program.

Saturday's Korean summit came hours after South Korea expressed relief over revived talks for a Trump-Kim meeting.
