Giuliani: Trump Lawyers Leaning to Not Letting Him Testify in Russia Probe

US President Donald Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani said on Sunday the president probably has the power to pardon himself but does not plan to do so.

Giuliani agreed with the letter's finding that Trump has unlimited power to pardon while saying, in a separate appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press", that pardoning himself would probably lead to impeachment.

Giuliani said impeachment was the initial remedy for a president's illegal behavior ― even in the extreme hypothetical case of Trump having shot former FBI Director James Comey to end the Russian Federation investigation rather than just firing him.

It all stems from the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged collusion between the Trump team and Russian officials in the election campaign that brought the president to power.

Mueller has told Trump's lawyers that investigators need to speak with the president to determine whether he sought to obstruct the probe.

"I think (if) the president decided he was going to pardon himself, I think that's nearly self-executing impeachment", Bharara told CNN Sunday.

The question of self-pardon arose after the New York Times published a letter to the counsel from Mr Trump's lawyers. "Pardoning other people is one thing".

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie agreed on Sunday, telling "This Week" that there is "no way" Trump will pardon himself. These letters argue, essentially, that the president can't obstruct justice.

"I don't know how you can indict while he's in office", he added. It's not the Mueller investigation, it's the fact that over the past year we have spent 67 million dollars paying for Donald Trump to go play golf.

"This memo is a polite way of taking 20 pages to say, 'He's not coming in without a subpoena, and even then, you're in for a protracted fight, ' " Frenkel said.

However, Trump's legal team has been reluctant to allow such an interview out of concern that prosecutors could use the president's words against him. I spent a moment wondering, but in the end I think they didn't mean this the way it sounds. Critics accused Trump of subverting the rule of law.

The lawyers emphasize that Trump had already gone beyond what is legally required of him and had waived the executive communications privilege in order to exhaustively satisfy Mueller's queries.

In this May 5, 2018, file photo, Rudy Giuliani, an attorney for President Donald Trump, speaks at the Iran Freedom Convention for Human Rights and democracy in Washington.

It is dated 29 January and was sent to Mr Mueller by John Dowd, one of Mr Trump's lawyers who has since left the team.

Laywer Elura Nanos, writing for Law & Crime, said a pardon would be "too much for" Trump's presidency to bear. "I don't think a president should pardon themselves", he told CNN's "State of the Union".

Or, I'll tell you what, you want a short little three, four month investigation?
