Kellyanne Conway: Kelly Sadler has other job opportunities in the Trump administration

Under normal circumstances one would expect the White House to quickly fire an aide who mocked a senator battling brain cancer, but that's not what happened.

In a meeting discussing Senate votes on then-Central Intelligence Agency Director Gina Haspel, Sadler downplayed possible McCain opposition, saying "it doesn't matter, he's dying anyway". John McCain's brain cancer, which triggered widespread backlash.

The comment ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many demanding Sadler's firing.

The White House refused to confirm or deny whether Sadler had said them.

"Yes, there are other administration jobs open to her and to others who would like to interview for those jobs", Conway responded when asked whether Sadler would be considered for other positions.

Sadler's comment enraged Cindy McCain, the senator's wife, and caused a furor on Capitol Hill among lawmakers in both parties. It was unclear whether her departure was specifically tied to her comment about Arizona Sen.

"Kelly Sadler is a world-class person who made a flippant off-hand remark in private", Scaramucci tweeted.

The Trump administration declined to publicly apologise and Trump demanded a crackdown on whoever leaked the story to the media.

Sadler was a special assistant to the president, responsible for putting together talking points for administration allies, the network reported. Sanders notably never apologized for Sadler's remark.

The effort to find leakers has led to an acrimonious atmosphere at the White House, aides have told CNN.

In the days after the backlash, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told Fox News those who work in the White House should be loyal to the president and his agenda.

"I am sure this conversation is going to leak, too", she derisively said to her staff, according to people familiar with the meeting, in comments first reported by Axios.
