United Nations to US: Stop Separating Migrant Children From Parents

She said information received from USA civil society groups indicated that several hundred children had been separated from their parents at the border since October, including a one-year-old. "The child's best interest should always come first".

Also on Tuesday, NBC reported that "border agents and child welfare workers are running out of space to shelter children who have been separated from their parents", and that out of the 550 children who have now been held longer than 72 hours, 300 were under the age of 12.

The US defends its policy saying it's a way to stop "illegal" immigration.

Rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani scolded the US for its "zero tolerance" policy in which some families have been separated after migration across the border.

The United States is the only UN member state not to have ratified the "Convention on the Rights of the Child".

If anything, Trump's tweet just proves that outrage over the draconian policy isn't going away. "Border Security laws should be changed but the Dems can't get their act together!", he said.

He said the children are taken to Health and Human Services within 72 hours of entering the U.S.to make sure they are well taken care of. The US daily reported that in April Attorney general Jeff Sessions had announced the "Zero tolerance" policy, which allowed the authorities to detain the people who are crossing the border illegally and the detained people will be subjected to criminal prosecution.

As I said, detention is never in the best interest of the child and always constitutes a child rights violation.

In a briefing on Tuesday, Shamdasani called the practice a "serious violation" of children's rights and called the separations "arbitrary and unlawful".

"What's happening now is a broad indication of a total lack of planning or forethought for the policy they enacted", Peter Boogaard, spokesman for immigration reform group FWD.us and a former Obama Administration official, told NBC.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, more than 650 children were separated from the parents at the border during a two-week period in May.

The administration has characterized its policy as being about illegal immigration, though numerous detained migrants - including those in families that are split apart - enter at official border crossings and request asylum, which is not an illegal entry.
