Woman drove 2 children in pet kennels, police say

A Tennessee woman was arrested after a video apparently showed her letting children out of pet kennels in the back of a parked vehicle. Leimome Cheeks, 62, was arrested and charged Saturday with two counts of child endangerment, the Memphis Police Department said.

Neighbours told the station that Cheeks had recently purchased two German Shepherd puppies and the kennels were meant for them. And indeed, it was around 95 degrees on the day that the children were seen in the pet kennels.

Facebook Leimome Cheeks is being charged with child endangerment after allegedly locking two children in dog kennels in the trunk of her SUV. She's such a nice lady, " neighbor Skylark Blake said.

The footage shows Cheeks open the cage for one of the children, seen wearing turquoise leggings and a blue T-shirt.

The video was filmed by a concerned citizen who said he to happened be in the right place at the right when he witnessed the unusual sight. I only met her like once maybe twice. "It's a huge mistake, get some help yeah but put her in jail, it's hard to say", he added.

Arresting officers noted there being no air conditioning vents in the back of the vehicle with the children telling police they became hot. "You looking at that video, you see she opened up the cage let the kids out the cage out the trunk of the auto, I mean it don't look good".

Strangely enough, there is little information available on the relations between Cheeks and the children, aged 7 and 8-years-old.

Cheeks was being held on Sunday in the Shelby County Jail.

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday at 9 a.m.
