Police seek help to identify journalist Shujaat Bukhari's killers seen on CCTV

Militants fired from close range at Bukhari outside his office in the Press Enclave area of Residency Road here, critically injuring him, his driver and a security guard, police sources said.

Terrorists shot at the Editor of Rising Kashmir newspaper Shujaat Bukhari in Press Colony in Srinagar city on Thursday. The pictures show the three attackers riding a bike with their faces covered.

"Killing of Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari is act of cowardice". While one of the personal security officers (PSO) guarding him was killed, another policeman and a civilian were injured, they added. His security guard died in the hospital, while another is in critical condition.

Today, Rising Kashmir published an edition of the newspaper. with its front page carrying the full-page photograph of its late editor-in-chief in black background.

The page also carried the message that the paper would not be cowed down.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra has conveyed shock and grief on the gruesome killing of Bukhari.

Bukhari was a protected journalist, guarded by two armed police round the clock. He was a fearless heart who fought fearlessly for justice and peace in Jammu & Kashmir.

Bukhari had been a strong advocate of peace in disputed Kashmir, at the heart of decades of hostility between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the Muslim majority region.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed shock at the incident. "He would often fight for the issues of people through his columns and various discussions but alas this voice of people stands silenced today brutally", she said. Prior to Sultan, in 1995, cameraman Mushtaq Ali was killed in a parcel bomb attack that was intended at former BBC correspondent Yusuf Jameel who, however, escaped with injuries.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has also strongly condemned the killing of the veteran journalist.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi said he was anguished to hear about the killing of Mr. Bukhari.

Malini Parthasarathy, Director - Editorial Strategy, The Hindu, said she was deeply saddened.

The assassination has triggered fear among journalists, who have lost several colleagues to suspected militants' bullets in the past and many of whom are perceived through the prism of the hyper-nationalist propaganda run by some national television channels.
