Minimum wage doesn't pay the rent anywhere

Minimum wage doesn't pay the rent anywhere

The majority - 70 percent - have monthly rents of $596 to $1,295.

The stark findings appear in an annual report released this week by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Each year, the group's "Out of Reach" report calculates the gap between the costs of rent and how much renters make. Increasingly, households across the country spend 50 percent or more of their income on housing, making them "severely cost-burdened". The national "housing wage" for a two-bedroom is $22.50. A worker earning the state minimum wage of $7.25 would have to work 166 hours each week to make ends meet. That will increase to $13.50 by 2020. The minimum wage in Redwood City, though it will soon increase, is $11.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in OH released a report today revealing that most OH jobs don't pay enough to cover the cost of rent.

Only five states - Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington - have one-bedrooms affordable for minimum-wage workers across 22 counties.

To afford a two-bedroom, a person who is paid the minimum wage must work 109 hours per week, or 2.7 jobs, the report found. Still, the results are bleak.

According report, today, an apartment like what Baumgartner rented should $960 a month. In Seattle/Bellevue, it's $24 and across King County it's $25.

NLIHC found that a worker needs to earn $17.90 an hour at a full-time job - 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year - to afford a modest one-bedroom apartment. It's $60 an hour.

Popular opinion is that IN has a low cost of living, but it is clear that is simply not the case for low-wage workers across the Hoosier state, according to a national report released today. Maui County's housing wage was calculated to be $31.13. "In America today, almost 11 million families pay more than half of their limited incomes toward rent and utilities".

And that trend looks unlikely to reverse any time soon.

Nationwide, Colorado's housing wage was 11th highest, with states such as Hawaii, Alaska, California and NY requiring a higher income to afford basic housing.

But with the low-wage workforce projected to grow over the next decade, particularly in service-sector jobs such as personal-care aides and food-preparation workers, without a concrete solution, the future isn't looking particularly bright. That translates into the largest shortfall between the average renter wage and "housing wage" in the nation.

The authors also express concern that the Trump administration's decision to cut housing subsidies will exacerbate the problem.

Despite Idaho's rural character, the state isn't exempt from issues of housing affordability associated with more developed regions.

Rents are lower in more economically depressed parts of the state like Rutland and the Northeast Kingdom, but available housing can have "serious health concerns" from lead paint and mold, according to Mahnke.

Data on fair market rents and incomes come from HUD.

According to the authors of Out of Reach, the national affordable housing crisis can be solved by increasing the number of qualifying households that receive housing assistance.
