President Trump Highlights Detrimental Impact of Migrant Crisis on Europe

"Crime in Germany is up 10% plus (officials do not want to report these crimes) since migrants were accepted", Trump tweeted, a day after he claimed German people were "turning against their leadership" over immigration.

Merkel now faces a unsafe mutiny from her hardline Bavarian Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, who has vowed to defy her and order police to shut German borders to most asylum seekers by early July absent an European Union accord.

Merkel isn't against a stricter border regime, but wants this to be part of a European agreement, which she hopes to achieve at an EU summit at the end of this month. He also wished Merkel "much luck" in her negotiations with other European nations, expected to take place at the European Council on June 28-29, and said his party supports "any European decision" aimed at resolving the migration problem.

The Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) is demanding Merkel get tough on refugees and asylum seekers, with the party facing a critical vote in regional elections.

For Merkel, who has faced the most serious challenge to her authority in recent days over her handling of the refugee influx of 2015 and 2016, the display of amitié was particularly important.

France's President Emmanuel Macron, center left, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, center right, pose with their governments after a meeting in the guest house of the German government in Meseberg north of Berlin, Germany, Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

The CSU, which faces regional elections in October, fears it could be toppled from its decades-old perch atop the wealthy southern state by the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party if it does not tighten policy towards migrants.

The survey turns up the pressure on Merkel, who has faced a backlash for allowing into Germany more than one million people fleeing war and misery in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere since 2015.

The architect of the division is her interior minister, Horst Seehofer of the Christian Social Union (CSU) - the Bavarian sister party to Merkel's own Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

But just last month, Germany's Interior Minister Horst Seehofer released statistics showing that crime is at its lowest level in more than two and a half decades.

"We are convinced that Germany needs reversal in its asylum policy", said Markus Söder, a member of Seehofer's party and the governor of Bavaria.

Merkel said she was optimistic her government and parliament would back the proposed reforms.

Arriving for talks with Merkel on Monday evening, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte stressed that his country can not be left alone to deal with the influx.

Seehofer and Merkel have long had an awkward relationship.

"The people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition".

If Merkel can't reach a comprehensive solution with European Union countries in the next two weeks, the situation could quickly escalate, experts warn, possibly leading to a collapse of her coalition.

If Seehofer decides to go it alone, Merkel would have to fire him, sparking an unprecedented CDU-CSU split, political scientist Heinrich Oberreuter told business daily Handelsblatt. "If we want to defend our liberal democracy, we need more Europe, not less".

Germany's interior minister vowed Monday to close the border to migrants by July if Angela Merkel fails to find solutions with European partners, but the chancellor rejected the threat.
