Prince William visits Jerash and recreates the Duchess of Cambridge's childhood picture

Until now it had been British policy not to make an official royal visit until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was resolved.

Yad Vashem chairman Avner Shalev guided Prince William through the memorial's exhibitions, which detail the death of six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during the Second World War.

William has just begun a five-day tour of the Middle East, with visits to sit Jordan, Israel, and the occupied Palestinian territories, as an outreach effort to help build relationships.

At a meeting with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, the prince, on a visit described by Britain as non-political, said he hoped "peace in the area can be achieved". "It's great honour for me to be able to say thank you, symbolically, to the British people who saved my life".

Originally from Leipzig, Alexander was reunited with his mother, who reached Britain the day before World War Two erupted, and with his father, who survived Nazi internment at Buchenwald.

Following his trip to Yad Vashem, where he toured the museum, laid a wreath in the Hall of Remembrance, and met two survivors from the Kindertransport, William wrote in the guest book that his visit was "profoundly moving".

On Wednesday, he is scheduled to meet the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, and Palestinian refugees and young people in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Yad Vashem said Princess Alice "hid the three members of the Cohen family - Rachel, Tilda and Michelle - in her palace in Athens during the Nazi occupation of Greece". He was also to meet the mayor of Tel Aviv and attend a reception held by the British ambassador that will include demonstrations by Israeli tech startups. Israel considers the city, home to holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, as an inseparable part of its capital.

Prince William, who's now riding solo on his tour of the Middle East-fair, considering Kate is still technically on maternity leave after giving birth two to Prince Louis two months ago-stopped in Jordan on Sunday to meet with Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, Syrian refugee children benefiting from UNICEF's programs, young entrepreneurs in the region, and members of the country's British Embassy.

Britain captured Palestine from the Ottoman empire in 1917 during World War One and administered the territory under worldwide mandate until 1948, pulling out a day before Israel declared independence.
