The stakes in this election are particularly high as the new president will be the first to enjoy enhanced powers under a new constitution agreed in an April 2017 referendum strongly backed by Erdogan.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has secured another election win, and this term will have even greater presidential powers than before.

The 12 have been charged with "insulting a state leader" over the incident, which took place before a mass rally in the Aegean city of Izmir by opposition candidate Muharrem Ince who stood against Erdogan in Sunday's presidential elections.

Prominent pollster Gezici predicted that with 48 per cent of votes, Erdogan would just fall short of the 50 per cent mark needed to secure a first-round victory.

Poling earlier came to a close in Turkey where people cast their ballots to vote in a new president and parliament. The news channel, which many consider to be one of the last opposition outlets still on the air, was live streaming election results as the country's only wire service Anadolu Agency sent in vote counts.

Jabbour said the Western countries had to accept Erdogan's victory and cooperate with him on counterterrorism and refugee issues.

The figures he claimed could not be independently verified, but images circulating on social media showed vast crowds of people assembled to hear Ince speak.

Asked by a journalist about the EU's reaction, Commission chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said that there would be a separate assessment from the Council meeting in Luxembourg on the fairness of the election process, taking into account the observers' reports.

How those narratives will play out amongst the electorate has remained unclear, with the various polling companies accused of promoting their own political intentions.

The 54-year-old politician criticized Turkey's new system, saying: "Turkey has cut off its links with democracy".
