Best Twitter reactions after South Korea knock Germany out

Mexican soccer fans around the world were celebrating with Korean fans after South Korea's upset of Germany helped Mexico advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup. In a wide open Group F, all they could hope was an upset result in the other match featuring defending champion Germany against South Korea.

With loss to South Korea, Germany fails to advance to the round of 16 at the FIFA #WorldCup for the first time.

And Loew, the 58-year-old who guided Germany to the world crown in Brazil four years ago, admitted he now needs time to decide whether his 12-year reign will continue - despite signing a new four-year contact in May. The disappointment is deep inside me.

France, holders of 1998 World Cup, got eliminated in 2002 in the group stages.

"We believe there will be a transition that will take place after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome of the tournament, and no one is better equipped to handle that than Jogi Loew".

The jubilation continued for South Korea although there was also disappointment in not progressing.

"We're very disappointed, but for such a match - they really have to go home", he said. Following their match against Sweden, Mexico's faithful turned their attention to the end of South Korea's game in Kazan. Initially flagged offside, the goal was finally allowed after a VAR review.

Germany ended up last in Group F while Sweden and Mexico advanced to the round of 16.

While their loss to Mexico could be explained by a lack of cohesion between defence and midfield when coming up against counter-attacks, there is little excuse for failing to even score against a Korea side who came into the game without a point.

"We decided in the DFB executive committee before the World Cup to offer a contract extension", DFB boss Reinhard Grindel told Frankfurt-based newspaper FAZ.

Germany lost on Wednesday despite dominating in possession - 69 percent to 31 percent - and leading South Korea in shots on goal.

With no option other than a victory to advance, Low inserted Mario Gomez and Muller for Khedira and Goretzka.

A long punt upfield saw Tottenham forward Son Heung-min chase a clearance to fire into an empty net and Korea hung on for a famous win that will be a consolation for their own elimination.

From 30 yards out, it should have been fodder for World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but after fumbling Jung's dipping drive Neuer scrambled desperately to clear as Son raced to pounce. Loew said he had not yet reflected on the future.
