Some Democrats With Eye on 2020 Say, ‘Abolish ICE’

"We should protect families that need our help and that's not what ICE is doing today", she said.

The debate over the agency's future follows the widespread outcry in recent weeks after the Trump administration separated more than 2,000 migrant children from their parents.

Earlier this week, the Texas Observer reported that 19 senior ICE investigators asked DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen to spin the Homeland Security Investigations division out of ICE.

Gillibrand told CNN on Thursday that ICE "has become a deportation force".

Several progressive Democratic candidates have made the abolishment of ICE a central platform of their campaigns, and a handful of incumbent Democrats have taken up the mantle as well.

An ICE spokesman could not be reached for comment on this story, but during a stop in North Dakota this week, Trump warned that if ICE were eliminated, the country would be "overrun with the worst criminal elements you have ever seen".

Ocasio's upset of Crowley, the fourth-ranking House Democrat, raised the question over whether her more liberal positions were indicative of a party shifting further to the left. "Many jurisdictions continue to refuse to work with HSI because of a perceived linkage to the politics of civil immigration". I wish we were pushing this to: "'We need comprehensive immigration reform'". Immigration enforcement is important, both sides agree on that.

A senior White House official said the Administration would be "leaning aggressively into the fight" over ICE. "HSI's investigations have been perceived as targeting undocumented aliens, instead of the transnational criminal organizations that facilitate cross border crimes impacting our communities and national security", wrote 19 special agents in charge, adding that "the perception of HSI's investigative independence is unnecessarily impacted by the political nature" of immigration enforcement. Hartford City Councilwoman Wildaliz Bermudez, of the Working Families Party, said the visceral nature of reporting from the border during the height of the family separation crisis pushed the movement toward a tipping point.

"But the abolish ICE debate oversimplifies everything", the aide said.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) became the first sitting senator to say the USA should "get rid of" ICE: "start over".

But it also stressed the importance of other functions of the agency, such as investigating cybercrime and counter-narcotic operations, according to the Daily Beast. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA, have stopped short of calling for ICE to be terminated outright and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has circulated talking points advising caution - arguing in a memo obtained by CNN that "abolishing ICE without changing President Trump's disastrous immigration policy will not solve the problem".

An estimated 30,000 protesters marched from Manhattan to Brooklyn with pins and signs that read, "Abolish ICE", joining more than 700 other rallies across the United States organized by the Families Belong Together-Freedom for Immigrants March.

Vitiello now serves as acting deputy commissioner of the US Customs and Border Protection.
