Leftist Lopez Obrador Wins Mexico's Presidential Election

"Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico". "They shouldn't dare commit a fraud, because if they do they will meet the devil", said Yeidckol Polevnsky, president of Lopez Obrador's Morena party.

Last year, Mexico recorded more homicides than at any point in its modern history, and it is on track to break that record this year. In the elections for Congress, his MORENA party and its allies could win majorities in both chambers, according to projections based on results still trickling in.

Polls have opened in Mexico's presidential and local elections, and front-running candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is among the first to line up at his polling place in Mexico City.

The ruling PRI, or Institutional Revolution Part, is expected to suffer losses in this election. The winning candidate said he will make that proposal in a meeting Tuesday with current President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Fond of acid putdowns of rivals and with views that lean toward nationalism and populism, the man best known as AMLO has drawn comparisons with U.S President Donald Trump.

"Peace and tranquility are the fruit of justice", Lopez Obrador said as he pledged "a plan of reconciliation and peace for Mexico".

"We will eradicate corruption in Mexico", Obrador told journalists on late Sunday, as quoted by the TV Azteca broadcaster. Lopez Obrador - popularly known as AMLO - published a book a year ago that was sharply critical of Trump, fueling concern he might prove more combative with Mexico's largest trading partner.

Lopez Obrador called Trump's tweet "very respectful".

She explained that if Lopez Obrador says anything to rattle the markets over the next few months, the peso's value will drop precipitously and his government could fail even before he takes office.

He also promised to sell presidential planes and turn the presidential palace into a public park while increasing the salaries of lower-paid government workers.

"I don't see how (Trudeau) is going to get this done", he said.

Lopez Obrador also spoke of reducing Mexican immigration to the United States through economic development. Thousands poured into the Zócalo, the city's main square, to hear their former mayor speak to his supporters.

"We demand the state guarantee the security of this electoral process", the PRI said in a statement.

In his victory speech, Lopez Obrador sought to assure investors he would pursue prudent economic policies and central bank independence.
